SA299 is a carbon-manganese-silicon steel plate designed for pressure vessels—often referred to as "gas drum steel" under US standards. It is typically used for welded components operating at temperatures up to 400°C, such as boiler drums and pressure vessels, where high strength at intermediate temperatures is required. Steel produced according to this standard comes in two grades: SA299 Gr.A and SA299 Gr.B.

SA299 Gr.A and SA299 Gr.B steel plates are typically supplied in the normalized or hot-rolled condition; plates with a thickness exceeding 50 mm are generally supplied in the normalized condition.

Comparison of chemical composition for SA299 Gr.A and SA299 Gr.B:
SA299 Gr.A (≤25 mm):
C: ≤0.26, Mn: 0.90–1.40, Si: 0.15–0.40, P: ≤0.035, S: ≤0.035
SA299 Gr.A (>25 mm):
C: ≤0.28, Mn: 0.90–1.50, Si: 0.13–0.45, P: ≤0.035, S: ≤0.035
SA299 Gr.B (≤25 mm):
C: ≤0.28, Mn: 0.90–1.40, Si: 0.15–0.40, P: ≤0.035, S: ≤0.035
SA299 Gr.B (>25 mm):
C: ≤0.30, Mn: 0.90–1.50, Si: 0.13–0.45, P: ≤0.035, S: ≤0.035

SA299 steel shall be killed steel and must meet the fine grain size requirements specified in the A20/A20M standard.

Comparison of mechanical properties for SA299 Gr. A and SA299 Gr. B steel plates:
Tensile strength: Gr. A → 75–95 (515–655); Gr. B → 80–100 (550–690)
Yield strength:
≤25 mm, Gr. A → ≥42 (290);
≤25 mm, Gr. B → ≥47 (325)
>25 mm, Gr. A → ≥40 (275);
>25 mm, Gr. B → ≥45 (310).

SA299 steel is characterized by high strength at intermediate temperatures, good ductility, and favorable heat treatment and welding properties.
