Grade A36:

Grade A36 is a standard specification carbon structural steel. Its mechanical properties are 58 to 80 ksi (kilos per square inch) and it has a yield of 36 ksi minimum. This is a grade of steel from the United States; other countries may use different steel grading methods.

A36 and the Titanic:

Grade A36 steel was used on the hull of the Titanic. The steel was made using the open-hearth process in an acid-lined open hearth, the only method available at the time. Research has found that due to this method the steel contained high amounts of phosphorous, oxygen and sulfur, causing it to become brittle at low temperatures.
